The Humminbird brand is manufactured by Techsonic Industries, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson Outdoors (Nasdaq: JOUT). At their state-of-the-art facility in Eufaula Alabama, Techsonic Industries designs, engineers and manufacturers sonar and electronic products primarily for the consumer market.

History:

Techsonic Industries, Inc. began in Eufaula, Alabama during 1971 as Fulton Electronics. Its humble beginnings were based in a small garage-like facility financed by a hand full of local investors. Operations began by modifying Heath Kits to produce electronic fish-finding devices, which were marketed as Humminbird Depth Sounders.

In 1975, the company grabbed the attention of every serious fisherman in the country when it introduced the first ever, waterproof depth sounder, the Super Sixty. The Super Sixty went on to become one of the largest selling fishfinders ever produced. Due to the climb towards #1 position in the marine electronics market and the turnover in leadership, in 1977 the company adopted the new name, Techsonic Industries, Inc.

During 1984, Techsonic rocked the industry with the unveiling of the LCR. The LCR2000 and LCR4000 became the forerunners of the liquid crystal display market. By 1987, Humminbird once again made history with the introduction of the LCR4ID fish finder and became the #1 selling product in both the sport-fishing and marine industries.

The Humminbird brand continued into the nineties with new innovations and goals. Techsonic introduced the first three-dimensional sonar with the Dimension 3-120. Teleflex Incorporated of Limerick, Pennsylvania noticed the success of the company and formed a partnership. In 1993, the Humminbird® WIDE series became the finest product introduction in Techsonic history. It was that year that Techsonic officially became a “Teleflex Company”.

The new century began with a continuation of the long string of innovation and leadership synonymous with Humminbird. The year 2002 marked the introduction of the Piranha series of entry level fishfinders. In 2003, the revolutionary Smartcast wireless fishfinder technology was launched opening the fishfinder market to all anglers fishing from the bank, dock, boat, anywhere. Later in 2003, the Matrix Fishing Systems were introduced providing advanced sonar, chartplotting and GPS capabilities for the professional angler.

Johnson Outdoors, a subsidary of S.C. Johnson of Racine, Wisconsin acquired Techsonic Industries in mid-2004. Techsonic is to be incorporated into the Minn Kota® Marine Electronics Division of Johnson Outdoors. “Minn Kota® and Humminbird® are two great brands built on a strong heritage of continuous innovation. An even greater future lies ahead for both as we look to leverage this formidable combination of cutting-edge technology and consumer-insight excellence to drive growth in the marine electronics marketplace,” said Helen Johnson-Leipold, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Johnson Outdoors. “We are very excited by the potential untapped opportunities to be realized short-term and long-term through this acquisition.”
